Select Board Approves Request to Rescind South Street Regulatory Speed Limits

PLAINVILLE — December 11, 2025 — Plainville Select Board votes to overhaul South Street speed limits through MassDOT. The board voted unanimously at its December 11 meeting to send an amended letter to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation requesting rescission of existing regulatory speed limits on South Street, Route 1A, and authorization of a thickly settled speed limit under MGL Chapter 90, Section 17C. Under the proposal, most of South Street would carry a uniform 30 mph limit, while a reduced 25 mph zone would apply through the business district from Lincoln Street to St. Martha's Roman Catholic Church. Board member Mr. Noble, who made the motion, warned that without prompt action the limits would revert to older, higher figures on file in the town clerk's office once the rescission letter arrives. The change reflects a town meeting vote in which residents called for lower speeds in the increasingly active town center.
