Select Board Votes to Name Room for Fernandes
Select Board · Meeting of September 2, 2026
Plainville Select Board votes unanimously to rename its meeting room for former Town Administrator Joseph Fernandes. Board members credited Fernandes, who served 23 years from 1992 to 2015, with helping create the town's first charter and brokering the host community agreement with Penn National Gaming that brought Plain Ridge Park Casino, and with it funding for the new public safety building, Town Hall and the meeting room itself. One member recalled Fernandes organizing volunteers to build the town's senior center on School Street after state funding fell short.
Another, a former Council on Aging Board chair, said, "I butted heads with Joe many times... but we always came to an agreement, and he was a wonderful man." The motion passed on a unanimous voice vote, with a dedication ceremony to follow at an unscheduled date.
